“Take not the road less traveled” – Mikaela Fudolig’s Valedictory Address

Mikaela Irene Fudolig, valedictorian summa cum laude of UP Batch 2007, closed Sunday’s commencement exercises with an inspiring speech, entitled Take Not the Road Less Traveled. In this speech she challenges the graduates to “take not the road less traveled; rather, make new roads, blaze new trails, find new routes to your dreams.”

She started her speech with an observation that UP students can’t seem to “stay on the pavement.” That “from every street corner that bounds an unpaved piece of land, one will espy a narrow trail that cuts the corner, or leads from it.” She goes on to wonder about the experience of the people who first walked on that “narrow trail that cuts the corner” and finally comparing it to the challenges of the UP student and how the UP student takes on a path different to what is conventional.

    Dearest Mikaela,

Hi! Alvin & I am 15 years old, did you know that I amazed you very much. I wish so that I will follow your steps to become the greatest physicist it is because I want also to take a course in physics. Probably, when you became a professor at U.P. I will meet you soon. This in coming school year I would try to become excellent in my academics too. See you soon.

I LOOOve the speech. You hit it right on bull’s eye. Can’t help but reminisce the days I was in UP. It was always best to take the alternate pathways.

The part i love most? “Take NOT the road less traveled. Rather, MAKE new roads, BLAZE new trails, FIND new routes to your dreams.”

Congratulations! May you influence you students to do the same.
