UP Symphonic Orchestra’s Concert is for FREE

November 26, 2007 directrix 2 comments

I’ve announced previously that the UP Symphonic Orchestra will be performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 on December 7. But I never got the answer as to whether the concert is free or not, until now.

Through an email to the UP Diliman Information Office, Chi Ibay confirmed that the concert is "free and open to the public. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis."

So there you go. Anybody interested can watch (I’m assuming from the reply that even non-UP people can watch); just make sure to come in early so you could be seated properly.

UP Symphonic Orchestra to perform Beethoven’s Ninth

November 17, 2007 directrix 6 comments

The latest What’s Up? newsletter announces that the University of the Philippines Symphonic Orchestra will be performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 “Choral” at the UP Theater on December 7, 9 PM 6 PM (Philippine time). As a big Beethoven and classical music fan, I’m really looking forward to watching it. I just hope it’s for free; well, even if it’s not, I’d try to save cash just to watch this. The concert is for free.

Here is the symphony, as conducted by Herbert von Karajan and performed by the Berlin Philharmonic. It may be worth noting that in this version, the exposition is not repeated (as it should have) in the first, second and third movements, so Karajan’s version is shorter than most renditions of the Ninth.

This is part one. Here is part two.

Enrolled

I’m finally enrolled! It was an adventure, literally.

  1. Went to the gym to cancel Bridge.
  2. Went to the CS Building to have Ma’am Chris sign my Form 5A and to request for post-advising. Met Aica there.
  3. (Still in the CS Building) Went on to validate my slots. I waited for several minutes.
  4. Bought Data Structures by Evangel P. Quiwa. Ate Mila owes me P125.00.
  5. Went downstairs, to the EnggLib 2, for my library clearance.
  6. Went to Melchor Hall, to get my Certification of Grades (COG). Met Mark here.
  7. Went to DLRC at Kamia Residence Hall, to submit my COG.
  8. Went to the registrar’s office to have my special assessment.
  9. Went to Palma Hall (AS) to pay my tuition and miscellaneous fees. It took me almost 30 minutes.
  10. Went to CASAA to have my Form 5 photocopied.
  11. Went back to DLRC to submit a copy of my Form 5.
  12. Rode the jeepney back to my dormitory to pay my dues. I didn’t make it in time (the cashier’s office was already closed).

I was accompanied by Aica (Mark came along later) during the “adventure.”

Prof Impressions: 2nd Sem, AY 07-08

November 9, 2007 directrix 4 comments

Another semester had started, so once again, it’s time for my Prof Impressions.

Physics 72 MTHFCR: Bhazel Anne Rara:: When you first meet her, you could say right away that she is a good person, and a good professor. Her string of patience is long (how else would she handle a large class such as ours?).

[I canceled this subject] PE 2 BR: Ma. Louella Caces:: I think she’s not as bad as people think, but I admit, her requirements/class policies are a bit too much, especially with those surprise quizzes, and she said so herself that he fails students (but never mentioned on what grounds will she fail a student — I’m guessing that it will be based on the quizzes). She also mentioned that she hates to hear cellphones going off, or else she’ll confiscate it and will only return it after the end of the semester.

Eng 11 MHV: Carmencita Abayan:: First impressions would tell you that she is masungit, but on the contrary, she is quite a kind professor. She inserts jokes here and there during discussions, and she’s smiling most of the time. On our class, she had the class report on different topics that we will tackle throughout the semester; and personally, I don’t like reporting in front of class and knowing that you’ll be graded for it.

Math 55 MHW: Leny Deita:: She’s a “cool” instructor, and can easily be approached by her students. One thing to note though, is that her teaching pace is… too fast for most people. So be prepared.

Math 157 TFX1: Henry Adorna:: At first glance, you wouldn’t think he’s a professor. But this guy knows his stuff. I also enjoy his lectures because you get the feeling that you’re just having a casual (yet insightful) conversation with him. At first, he might look scary, but I think he is not.

CS 32 TFU: Evangel Quiwa:: The legend, Sir Quiwa, is one guy you would admire. Teaching is his second nature. Just one thing, though: he speaks very softly. He should use a microphone when teaching. If his voice was a little louder, his lectures would always be enjoyable. You really have to sit in front of the class to fully understand and appreciate the Quiwa Experience. He likes to make-up acronyms for stuff.

Friday’s Daily Batch Run Results

See yesterday’s post to see my latest schedule! In short, nothing had changed since yesterday. I’m still missing one GE subject (was hoping to get STS, but to no avail).

On the PE side, I guess I’m really going to have to deal with Caces’ Bridge (PE 2 BR) this semester. I’m glad I’m classmates with Karin and Kevinsky — at least I know somebody in Caces’ class.

Note to self: Enlist in another PE subject and cancel PE 2 BR.

I will update tomorrow for my second daily batch run result.

Leaving for Diliman tomorrow

November 6, 2007 directrix 1 comment

Sigh. The short vacation is over. I am set to leave Batangas for Diliman tomorrow by noon. See you guys there!

On Thursday, I will start enrolling for the second semester. UP Diliman will be doing the entire registration process electronically. For those who were unlucky enough to experience a “beta” of this system during the summer term know how painful the new system will be.
