“Take not the road less traveled” – Mikaela Fudolig’s Valedictory Address

April 28, 2007 directrix 8 comments

Mikaela Irene Fudolig, valedictorian summa cum laude of UP Batch 2007, closed Sunday’s commencement exercises with an inspiring speech, entitled Take Not the Road Less Traveled. In this speech she challenges the graduates to “take not the road less traveled; rather, make new roads, blaze new trails, find new routes to your dreams.”

She started her speech with an observation that UP students can’t seem to “stay on the pavement.” That “from every street corner that bounds an unpaved piece of land, one will espy a narrow trail that cuts the corner, or leads from it.” She goes on to wonder about the experience of the people who first walked on that “narrow trail that cuts the corner” and finally comparing it to the challenges of the UP student and how the UP student takes on a path different to what is conventional.

A second “Earth”?

April 25, 2007 directrix Leave a comment

Just this morning reports from major press outlets refer to an “Earthlike” planet found in a nearby star system. According to a European Southern Observatory press release:

This exoplanet – as astronomers call planets around a star other than the Sun – is the smallest ever found up to now and it completes a full orbit in 13 days. It is 14 times closer to its star than the Earth is from the Sun. However, given that its host star, the red dwarf Gliese 581, is smaller and colder than the Sun – and thus less luminous – the planet nevertheless lies in the habitable zone, the region around a star where water could be liquid! The planet’s name is Gliese 581 c.

Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony

April 24, 2007 directrix Leave a comment

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Opus 36, was composed between 1801 and 1802, in probably one of the most depressing periods of his life. At this time, he began to realize that he was becoming deaf. This is also the period where he wrote the famous (or infamous) Heiligenstadt Statement. It reflects his despair over his increasing deafness and his desire to overcome his physical and emotional ailments in order to complete his artistic destiny.

It is worth noting that although this work was written during this testing times, the overall mood of the Symphony is blissful, calm and, to a degree, energetic. This shows his passion for his music cannot (and never did) succumb to his personal struggles in life. Although some of his works depict struggle, they almost always end with triumph and victory.

First few bars of the first movement.

UP Diliman has a sixteen-year-old summa cum laude.

April 20, 2007 directrix 3 comments

That’s right. One of this year’s summa cum laude (there are 8 summa this year) is Mikaela Fudolig, a sixteen-year-old BS Physics graduate.

Mikaela Irene FudoligOnly 16 years old, Fudolig is the youngest student to be graduated by the University in the recent years and one of only two admitted to UPD without a high school diploma and without taking the UP College Admission Test.

She was only 11 years old and a sophomore at the Quezon City Science High School when she was granted permission to enroll at UPD as a non-degree student, having volunteered for a prototype Early College Placement Program the UPD College of Education was spearheading. After earning remarkable grades for an academic year, the Department of Education (DepEd) endorsed her admission to UPD, which was approved by the UP Board of Regents on May 30, 2003.

I really am artistic!

You Are 30% Left Brained, 70% Right Brained

The left side of your brain controls verbal ability, attention to detail, and reasoning. Left brained people are good at communication and persuading others. If you’re left brained, you are likely good at math and logic. Your left brain prefers dogs, reading, and quiet.

The right side of your brain is all about creativity and flexibility. Daring and intuitive, right brained people see the world in their unique way. If you’re right brained, you likely have a talent for creative writing and art. Your right brain prefers day dreaming, philosophy, and sports.

Are You Right or Left Brained?

I found this nice video on YouTube. It seems that this “MTV” is related to Sanchez’s campaign.
